Doni Burdick : Candle (In The Window) / Whatcha Gonna Do
USA : Outta Sight

In Stock
The sixth in the series of collectable vinyl 7 inch singles from Outta Sight. “Candle (In The Window)” and “Whatcha Gonna Do” were both originally recorded in 1971 but, incredibly, never saw a release at the time! We had to wait 20 years for Detroit legend Ron Murphy to work hismagic at the cutting lathe and finally issue this magnificent pairing on his Soul King imprint. Here we pay tribute to Ron by re-issuing his finest work on his own, original, label - Ron’s. The crowning glory of Ron Murphy’s Northern Soul output.

Claude 'Baby' Huey : Why Would You Blow It / Drifting
UK : Soul 7
7" =
£5.99
In Stock
Another total quality double sider, this time recorded by Claude Huey and taken from the Fantasy-owned Galaxy label out of San Francisco. ‘Why Would You Blow It’ has been in major demand for some time, not surprising given the easy, laid-back dancefloor appeal - it’s a mid-tempo Northern mover sure to put a smile on the face of every dancer in the room. The flip side ‘Why Did Our Love Go’ meanwhile, is held in equal esteem amongst aficionados of Heartbreak soul. A deep-soul ballad of the down and out, no-hope variety, the song contrasts beautifully with the breezy feel of ‘…Blow It’. The original 45 is a pretty tough one to find, and even then there is major interest and competition, given the broad appeal of ‘Why Would You Blow It’, a song which would sound at home in a Northern, Crossover and perhaps even a Funk set. The price and demand is only going to rise, making this a very timely reissue indeed.

Clay Brown : Walk With A Groove / Everybody's Talkin
UK : Tramp Records
7" =
£7.49
In Stock

After an excursion into the jazzier side of things on recent releases, Tramp Records is proud to announce another funky soul jewel from the mid 1970s.

Clay Brown, originally from a small town near Barnwell, SC (the birthplace of James Brown) recorded a couple of 45 rpm singles which were released on the Florentine label in the mid to late 1970s. "Walk With A Groove" has some of that funk thing going while "Everybodys Talking" is a bit more on the soulful side. Whatever, both songs are highly prized in European Northern circles fetching over $1000 each for original mint 45s.

Marsha Gee : Peanut Duck

FINALLY BACK IN STOCK! ITS BEEN A LONG WAIT FOR THIS ONE!
Killer re-issue 45 from the Penniman label featuring a mysterious track from Marsha Gee. Tittyshakin, Heavy Soul, Funky R&B. Guaranteed dancefloor winner!

The identity of the singer is actually unknown. Who was she? No-one actually knows. Another cause for question is that this was never actually given a full release, and why the hell wasn't it! The acetate was discovered in the 70s and placed on various ropey comps. Here is the first official release of it, and even though well overdue, still sounds fresh as hell. Recommended!

The fifth instalment for the D-Classics "Soul All Timers" series that's been bringing up to light some amazing soul wonders. This time, it's a very special one from the D-Class crew, as they bring some of their personal all time favourites to wax. The EP opens with Rosetta Hightower's "Rocking Chair", taken from her hard to find 1970 album "Hightower". It's a superb piece of rock-tinted soul-funk with a big vocal and major dancefloor appeal. Next we have Al Wilson and "W-Brook", another storming psych era soul bomb. Al also pops up with his best known track, northern soul anthem "The Snake". Lastly we have the distinctive voice of Jimmy Ruffin on "Tell Me What You Want", a gem of a disco-soul track in a Philly style.

New double-header from Black Cat! Jazz-fusion classic 'Man Of Mystery' and what sounds a lot like folk-rock-drug-crooner Janis Joplin is Essra Mohawk's 'Summertime' .... we don't know if it's a 'summer' essential but it certainly feels good in todays heat!

Roy Ayer’s superb ‘Lots of Love’ was originally released on his own independent Uno Melodic label in 1983. The album is one of his deepest releases stylistically, spanning everything from Fela Kuti-Afrobeat to seminal 80s Boogie funk. The album includes the super-dark ‘Chicago’, much loved by Moodyman, Theo Parrish and other Detroit minimalists. Recorded around the time of other seminal Roy Ayers productions such as ‘Eighties Ladies’ and ‘Sylvia Striplin’, this really is as good as it gets.

Jazzier Times : Vol. 1
UK : D-Classics
12" =
£8.49

D-Classics launch a new 12" series, focusing more on 70s / 80s jazz-funk and fusion than the usual DC soul style. Paz "Laying Eggs" is taken from the band's 1980 LP "Paz Are Back", which has great soloing over a slinky, funky Moog bassline and groovy beat. If you like Herbie Hancock circa "Headhunters", then this is a must. Percy Faith is up next with the sublime "First Light", a Freddie Hubbard-penned track taken from his 1973 album "Corazon". It's a fully orchestrated Rhodes-led jazz-dance winner. We end with another jazz-dance bomb, Pete Schofield's "Do Something Nice Today", featuring great vocals from a mystery female singer.
