Hedzoleh Sounds : Hedzoleh
UK : Soundway
Vinyl Album =
£14.49
In Stock

Hedzoleh Soundz were one of the first and most original ‘Afro’ bands from 1970s Ghana playing an unusual mix of traditional music from across the country tinged with western rock. They were residents at the notorious Napoleon nightclub where they met South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela in late 1973. The music for the ‘Hedzoleh’ album would later be used by Masekela as the backbone to his afo-jazz classic, “Masekela – Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz”.

The original trumpetless Hedzoleh sound hasn’t had a chance to be heard for nearly 40 years…until now.

Sweet Talks : The Kusum Beat
UK : Soundway
Vinyl Album =
£14.49
In Stock

Sweet Talks were amongst the top five most popular bands in Ghana during the 1970s having recorded a string of hit albums. ‘The Kusum Beat’ was originally released in 1974 and became a household favourite with heavy emphasis on the ‘Afro’ through its traditional rhythms and motifs, blended together into a modern mix that combined highlife, funk and Afrobeat.

The Kusum Beat is far from typical of their trademark sound but shows just how versatile an outfit they were – able to turn their hands to any one of a number of styles. It’s a great reminder of how open-minded, experimental and curious the music scene in Ghana was in the first half of the 1970s.

Frank Gossner is a lucky fellow, and a hard-working one at that. For the past few years he's spent much of his time on record safari in Africa, tracking and hunting rare vinyl. What a job! But having said that this record is also the result of many years persistence, detective work and sheer hard graft, and musically it's a refeshing take on the Afrobeat resurgence of late. Concentrating on the danceable disco/boogie side of Afrobeat, there's infectious rhythms a-plenty on this double LP which comes highly recommended!

African Pearls : Guinee 70: The Discotheque Years
: Syllart
Double Album =
£17.49

Not the kind of discotheque grooves you might normally expect, but a really wonderful range of music from the 70s scene in Guinea - most of which would still be right at home on the dancefloor! The tunes are often upbeat, and rhythmic - but also filled with instrumental elements that vie equally for attention with the beats - off-kilter horns, jagged guitar parts, and other bits that ring out and really make these tunes great - all in ways that are very different than the familiar afro funk of the time, or any of the softer sounds in the contemporary world music generation. There's vocals on most of the tracks, but the instrumentation alone is what really grabs us - a hypnotic blend of unexpected elements that's plenty appealing, even if you don't understand the language or culture. It features super boiro band, bembeya jazz national, kaloum star, 22 band kankan, camayenne sofa etc.
