Producer and selector Quantic first met Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke in 2004, while hunting down records in Addis Ababa with Soundway’s Miles Cleret and photographer/filmmaker B+ (as featured in Wax Poetics Issue 14). Five years later, they were reunited at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angeles for the Mochilla/VTech production of Timeless, where Mulatu played with a full orchestra and jazz vets Bennie Maupin and Phil Ranelin. Quantic’s hour-long opening DJ set, dubbed Addis to Axum and comprised almost entirely of music discovered during his 2004 trip to Ethiopia. Here's the the set in CD format brought to you by the good folks at Mochilla!

Mochilla’s Timeless Series remains one of the most memorable events of the last few years. For those unlucky enough to have missed the Suite for Ma Dukes and Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai performances, the DVDs are now available. To help promote the release, Brazil-based DJ Nuts has compiled a staggeringly excellent 78-minute mix of the Best of Verocai. Think a synthesis of soul, classical, funk, folk, samba, rock and jazz, occupying a psychedelic middle ground between Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew” and Frank Zappa’s “Hot Rats.” Absolutely necessary.

Excellent Black Rock/Psyche comp from the Memphix Crew. Lots of rare stuff here, lots of instro's, from the short lived scene from the late 60's & early 70's. Artists include Preacher, Gran Am & Curtis Knight. Specialist, but no less good.
This mysterious funk compilation made a lot of waves a few years ago and then mysteriously vanished. Basically, the idea was to get black rock bands that bordered on funk music, or funk bands that bordered on rock music. This ain't no Al Green, or sweet soul music, only the hardest hitting funk/rock from the late 60's/early 70's. If you dig the early parliament/ Funkadelic sound or all the garagey black bands that wanted to be Hendrix that came out during this period, this is a KILLER. 16 tracks total. Fans of Brainfreeze, Product Placement etc. should not miss this beauty!

Everybody knows DJ Premier is the best, not because of the countless classic albums he was a part of, but because EVERYTHING he did was dope. At some point, he must have realized that most people don't have every 12" and random album cut that he produced, so he started the Rare Play series. Contained within this CD are some of the best rare DJ Premier beats, as chosen by DJ Premier himself, and pu together in his usual slick style of juggling and scratchung (and of course that vocal ident over every mix). A great selection of classics and tracks you may have missed.

One of the best mix CD's of all time. PERIOD! And its not even a straight hip hop mix. DJ Spinbad cuts up pop hits and soul and hip hop classics from the 80's. This inspired DJ Yoda to go and do "Cut and Paste" and showed many DJ's its all about how you play tracks as well as just what you play. The 80's Fresh Mix put paid to alot of hip hop snobbery! Every home should have one of these, your Mum and girl will love this just as much as you!!

Count Bass D is a legend in underground hiphop since the early 90s. He produces, raps and is a unique voice all-around. On this mix Count Bass D meshes his Some Music Part Five with slices of laidback charm, flyness and a little Tennessee boom bap. Like a sweaty slow grind in the corner at an overcrowded after party conjuring a new day, this mix takes a low ride through the bends of his own sound creations. Slim and nice, from the south side of the map, Count Bass D keeps it buzzing!

This one is simply a continuation of something he does best without even needing to see: mixtapes. Phoreyz has been an LA secret for a long time—here is your chance to find another one that peeps will be talking about for a long time. Go ahead and take that!
DJ Muro

CD

Out Of Stock
Nothing bitter here,as the soul is all sweet, slinky, and mellow! A hip batch of work from the 70s, all mixed to perfection by the mighty DJ Muro! The set's nothing in the way of notes, but packs plenty of punch with the music, as Muro's got a great ear for the sort of slow-stepping, laidback-grooving numbers we really love from back in the day! The mix is relatively straight, not too much tricking around with the tunes and the package does not include tracklist, but titles include "Give Me Just Another Day" by The Miracles, "Don't Shut Me Out" by Bobby Wilson, "Wanna Be Where You Are" by Zulema, "Freak" by Sweet Stuff, "You Can't Hide Love" by Art Webb, "Now Your Baby Is A Lady" by Sweet Inspirations, "Girls" by The Moments & The Whatnauts, "Private Performance" by Sylvia, "Oh Love" by Smoke, "Walkin In The Rain" by Danny Pearson, and "Don't Try To Save Me" by The Joneses.

This is Run for Cover II - the first part of which was Chairman Mao taking the reigns on his own, but this time he has brought DJ Muro to the party. These 2 Japanese record collecting nerds hit us with 49 cover versions of classics. This is not so much a mix album, but at the same time they are not giving away clean versions of each of these tracks, so there is a bit of blending & cutting records a second or two short. It's really very good, with covers of 'what's goin on', 'the message', 'tighten up', 'apache' and many more.

Kazahaya
CD

Here comes Kazahaya with a dope mix! It's a double CD. The first disc "The Funcky Side" is a midtempo mix of breaks and hip hop. Kaza takes us into Funk, Soul and Disco, with some obvious tracks and some deeper collector picks Within this organic music he drops in some classic hip hop tracks that have used some of the breaks and some that are completely unrelated but fit well The hip hop is the good stuff, funky and bouncy mostly from the 90's golden era. Then on disc two "The Soulful Side" Kaza picks up the pace with a mix of more uptempo breaks driven soul. He touches, on Northern and Boogies whilst still adding in good dollops of straight soul and funk. There's not many people in the world that could put together a mix like this. Muro, Shadow, Cut Chemist, The P Brothers and J Rocc could all do it, Kaza is elevating himself into that upper echelon.....

The Jurassic 5 DJ cut and pastes together loads of his classic productions on this stunning mixtape. After a while away, it has now appeared on vinyl too. Long time Fat City fave Cut Chemist drops this sneaky ittle mixtape in advance of his full length solo debut, as a sort of this-is-where-we're-up-to - loads of his classic productions and remixes get cut and pasted together with some extremely sharp deck skills. A truckload of J5 tackle, Bunkys Pick, his remixes of Ugly Duckling, Blackalicious and Original Artform all appear, as do some of the original breaks used. A stunning mix, if a little brief at 28 minutes, but the amount of records used make it worthwhile. Now it has appeared on vinyl - a bit unusual, but handy for when you need a break while DJing...
