Explosive funk madness! Mayhem created from the overactive minds of the maddest of French musicians! In which we find members of cult group Cruciférius, the Franco-Moroccan soul singer Vigon, plus the gifted arranger Karl-Heinz-Schafer (author of the equally insane ‘Les Gants Blancs du Diable’). Originally released in France on the Barclay sub-label EGG, void of any sales pressure and entirely dedicated to soul, funk and psychedelic music, the musicians ran riot. Popcorn was launched in 1969 with the aim of creating a new dance style to rival the twist and the jerk. Whether serious, or not, their initial venture soon evolved into a liberating and unbridled experiment at the service of the wild and primitive. Using the studio as an instrument in its own right, they gave birth to a mutant jam track rolling out in 7 different versions/variations, and so prefiguring the remixing technique ahead of its time.

The music was composed and played by Colombier and Jullien together with an all-star ensemble of finest studio players. With drummer André Arpino heard as well as Hammond master Eddy Louiss, Maurice Vander on piano, Raymond Gimenez on electric guitar or Roger Guérin on trumpet. “Riviera Sound No.1” stands out as one of the finest moments in French funky jazz, never reissued before and here taken from the original tapes!
