Bflecha : Ceja De Carnival
UK : Arkestra Discos
10" =
£8.99

BFlecha has been making some serious noise lately with the certified floor banger 'Ceja de Carnival'. This is her particular vision of current dirty-south hip hop sprayed with a touch of day-glo psychodelia; like Three Six Mafia playing 808s and flutes on a starry night around a campfire with Gang Gang Dance. It is already receiving strong reactions at the Sonar Festival and plays from DJs including Rustie and Sinden.

Africa Hitech : Blen
UK : Warp
12" =
£5.49
In Stock
Africa Hitech is more than a name; it is an ideology - one that embodies its member's passions for an eclectic diaspora of electronic styles, from dub and acid to UK garage, grime, techno, house and Jamaican dancehall. Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek stand at the intersection of all these styles (and more) and the result is a bass-fuelled manifesto: the opening salvo being 'Blen'.

Lauren : Stuck Remixes

TIP! Remixes of the new school soul sensation Lauren. Soul Vibes meet Beatsy Dubstep styles. Lauren Pritchard is a Tennessee-born singer/songwriter decamped to West London. Her brand of 1970’s country-soul is top notch. She could easily match Amy Winehouse and she far outstrips the weak soul of Duffy and Joss Stone.

The A side is mellow dubstep from Various Productions. Deep squelchy bass builds throughout the track until it hits double time! The flip is produced by Guido and is a touch techier in a Clouds style. Almost perfect abstract new school soul.

Houseshoes / Jordan Rockwell : Los Angeles 4/10
Ireland : All City

£8.49

4th 10 of the series sees us take a trip to the West Coast via Detroit, Michigan. 2 expats from the Midwest Houseshoes and Jordan Rockwell (formerly Snowman) come with some heavy hip-hop based instrumentals. Houseshoes, known as the ambassador of Detroit hip hop, relocated to Los Angeles in 2006 and we don’t need to go over his credentials here - pressed the classic Jay Dee - Unreleased EP" back in 1996 plus the Phat Kat – Dedication To The Suckers 12” in 99, and as a producer has worked with some of Detroit’s elite emcees - from Dilla and Big Proof, to Elzhi (Slum Village), Guilty Simpson, Black Milk, Ty & Kory , Ta’Raach etc - to help contribute to the soundtrack of his city. He comes with 2 slammin tracks here – firstly a nod to his favourite cigarette brand with Newports and then a flip of the classic 60s groover on ‘The Look’. Over on the other side it’s the second run out on All City for Detroit native Jordan Rockswell. He released Street Corner Music as Snowman a few years back and he has 3 tracks here – ‘Winter Warfare’, ‘The Groove’ and a great flip of JB on ‘Mr Dynomite’. Usual B+ sleeveart once again - collect the set.

Authenticity is that rarest of components; the most wanted, yet the hardest to come by. The one that can't be bought. The one that can't be faked. Bristol's Scott Hendy has it. Twelve years of hard work, plying his trade, fine-tuning his art have seen to this. A DJ (Boca 45) and producer (Malakai-Domino Records) who has remained creative through it all – before Bristol's musical name meant something, while genres were being created, and after the dust settled – he shows no signs of slowing down. None whatsoever.

Paul White : My Guitar Whales (Extended Version)
UK : One Handed Music
7" =

My Guitar Whales is the first single from Paul White’s sophomore album, Paul White & The Purple Brain. A psychedelic stripped-down banger, it mixes an Eastern-influenced organ hook, rock hard drums, fuzzy synth bass and delirious chanting to mesmerising effect. On the flip, The Bright Future twins a naggingly catchy piano refrain with tumbling drums and the quirky touches that give White’s music so much character.

Hovatron : Gold Star Radiation / Let's Get Wet
UK : Lo Fi Funk
7" =
£6.99
Out Of Stock
Lo Fi Funk’s third release comes courtesy of the young hiperactive Hovatron. The A side is an absolute dancefloor bomb. “Gold Star Radiation” is what club music would be like if most clubs had any balls: the sweaty beats and rude bassline pound alongside a melodic riff reminiscent of Detroit techno and old School Acid house - perfect to destroy a dancefloor packed with hip hop heads or to stun an audience more comfortable with a 4X4 fare, in a good way. On the flip side, “Let’s Get Wet” sees Purple Sound collide with the Dirty South’s Chopped’n’Screwed style, sprinkling thousands of music particles on top of the final epic synth lines. Crunk leaves the 9mm home and decides to go play arcade games instead!

Bristol-born and London-based producer Rekordah takes charge of Lo Fi Funk records’ second instalment and crafts his own brand of cosmic, dismembered hip hop, in that wonky style everyone is raving about. “Cherry Coke” on the A side, is full of bubbling sounds that evoke the soda drink your nephew drinks while he plays with that Atari you found in the attic, played over a Dilla style beat; whilst in the flip side we find “Butternut”, in which P-Funk Synthesisers rise side to side with space age special effects, frantic syncopated drums and 22nd century boom bap.

With his album Splazsh just around the corner, three exclusives here — classic Actress, multi-faceted, open-hearted and bold; with a cracking Zomby. Dubstoned 3 is the long due follow up in a series of dubstep based releases by Funckarma. Dubstoned 3 will be released in limited editions on vinyl. Dubstoned 3 is equally intelligent as it is rude. The mid tempo rhythms and sounds contrast beautifully with the crushing beats and clear production, typical of Funckarma's style.

Two psyche-out gems from the one they call the Gonja Sufi. The album track 'Kobwebz' and the exclusive non-album track 'Speaketh' are products of the Gaslamp Killer and GonjaSufi's tele-beard production methods, combining garage sitars and ancient bass tones with a guttural hoarse holler to sound like little else out there. Kobwebz' is one of the album's finest moments while 'Speaketh' sounds like some blues-raga meditation unearthed from William Burroughs' private Moroccan archives. Out there.

Illum Sphere : Long Live The Plan
UK : Fat City
12" =
£6.99

Illum Sphere drops the first vinyl ep of a two part album. "Long Live The Plan" features six new tracks plus a Samiyam remix. The EP starts with the apocalyptic introduction "Long Live The Plan", using soaring Bladerunner-esque strings which then flows effortlessly into "Better Late State", a menacing 2-stepper with sparse whiplash snares and driving kicks rolling with a deft sub bass. Then cue the terrifyingly restrained "Psycho", sound system music at it's most refined. Out of that and into the distorted soundtrack string laced "Never Lie Twice". On side B, "Chasing The Midnight Moth" rises from the ashes of the more sinister A-side. Dusty in it's introduction, it blossoms in color with an unusual fusion of sounds. "Shadowman" rounds off the original productions, seemingly driving through chaos and finishing in an epic cliffhanger. We finish off with a dope remix of "Psycho" from Samiyam (Brainfeeder, Hyperdub) flipped in a style that only this LA native can do.
