Sweet Talks : The Kusum Beat
UK : Soundway

Sweet Talks were amongst the top five most popular bands in Ghana during the 1970s having recorded a string of hit albums. ‘The Kusum Beat’ was originally released in 1974 and became a household favourite with heavy emphasis on the ‘Afro’ through its traditional rhythms and motifs, blended together into a modern mix that combined highlife, funk and Afrobeat.

The Kusum Beat is far from typical of their trademark sound but shows just how versatile an outfit they were – able to turn their hands to any one of a number of styles. It’s a great reminder of how open-minded, experimental and curious the music scene in Ghana was in the first half of the 1970s.

Hedzoleh Sounds : Hedzoleh
UK : Soundway
Vinyl Album =

Hedzoleh Soundz were one of the first and most original ‘Afro’ bands from 1970s Ghana playing an unusual mix of traditional music from across the country tinged with western rock. They were residents at the notorious Napoleon nightclub where they met South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela in late 1973. The music for the ‘Hedzoleh’ album would later be used by Masekela as the backbone to his afo-jazz classic, “Masekela – Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz”.

The original trumpetless Hedzoleh sound hasn’t had a chance to be heard for nearly 40 years…until now.

Mulatu’s on a roll. Last year was a good one for the legendary Mr Astatke, what with the brilliant collaboration with The Heliocentrics, followed by a blinding career retrospective compliation later in the year. In the latter part of last year, whilst still basking in long-deserved acclaim, he was busy finishing off Mulatu Steps Ahead. The Heliocentrics are back on board, but this time he’s also recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, and some of the UK’s leading jazz and African players.

Debut LP from Raph Dumas & the Primaveras entitled Ode to Tanguy Jo is a unique album. The title refers to the classic Ode To Billie Joe song and is a tribute to Tanguy Jo and his secret band. It explores various musical horizons, melding together gutsy rhythms from various dance genres with improvisational ideals from jazz, raw funk power and ancestral Catalonian sounds. On paper, this musical mix sounds hard to stomach, but the various flavours work together wonderfully. Includes bonus MP3 coupon.

Setenta : Funky Tumbao
UK : Hot Casa Records
Vinyl Album =

SETENTA is a Latin Funk combo of seven musicians with a vision. The idea of the band is to create an innovative bridge between the Latin musical vocabulary and the soulful funk counterculture of Paris.

In 2006, band leader Osman JR wanted to infuse the Nuyorican salsa sound into the funk universe like it was done during funk's golden age in the 1970's. He wanted to break all the academic rules and perpetuate the meeting between Latin melodic structure and the classic funk rhythm. So he reunited all of his best musician friends; the common thread between them was their profound love for Jazz, Salsa, Funk, Hip-Hop, and Soul. After many successful live exhibitions in their native France, they decided to make the leap into creating their own original Latin Funk Fusion. This is the fruit of their inspiration.

Setenta found a unique sound during their exploratory, inspired recording sessions: a mix between seventies-style analog production, contemporary funk/soul arrangement, and of course rootsy, body-moving percussion. Recorded live-to-tape from March 2007 to December 2009, Setenta's new record Funky Tumbao is poised to capture the future of funk.

Often overlooked in the English-speaking Caribbean, the scattering drums and soaring clarinets of the biguine ruled the airwaves and dancefloors of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the 1960s. This album showcases the vibrancy of the scene on the islands in the '60s and '70s - a scene that would go on to develop the all-conquering sound of zouk in the '80s. Uptown bands like Ensemble La Perfecta and Les Loups Noirs combine heavy rhythms and psychedelic effects in an inimitable style - check out the crazed Jet Biguine for a better idea! The deep and introspective sounds of Monsieur Dolor and Guadeloupean hero Robert Loison show the deep African roots of the music - songs born out of the plantations, with an insistent rhythm and mournful vocals that are unique to these islands.
Overlooked outside of Paris, Montreal and the French Caribbean for many years, this collection redresses the balance by presenting the vital sounds of Martinique and Guadeloupe - missing pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle of the Caribbean.

More from Mulatu Astatke and friends as the L’arome label from France dig out some more late 60s Ethiopian jazz which was around before Fela Kuti came to the west, and well before Manu Dibango crossed over with Soul Makossa. Excellent French comp of 60s/70s grooves.  Ethiopian culture has always stood apart from the African pack and the msuical evidence is here.  Taking in influences from America and Europe and wearing them on their sleeves, these musicians and production is still rooted deeply in Ethiopia.  The standard of the playing is excellent and varied throughout.  The solely Ethiopian parts are the vocals, taking heavy influence from North Africa and The Middle East.  Amazing comp from the epic Ethiopiques Collection, picked here for vinyl.  Recommended.

NOW ON DOUBLE VINYL!!! Twelve piece Afrobeat Orchestra Antibalas return with their fifth album (on yet another label) of their 10 year career. They still manage to transfer the franetic energy of their legendary live shows onto a five inch plastic disc - no mean feat when you consider these guys reputation. The albums kicks off with a moody, jazzy feel on Beaten Metal, before slapping you round the face with the 12 minute stormer Filibuter X. Sanctuary, another 12minute plus piece, is more traditional Fela-inspired grooves, before Hilo's hip hop feel to the drums gets those samplers purring. The expected political edge of this style comes to the fore on War Hero, while I.C.E. is one of the most out there and experimental pieces I have heard from this band. Final track Age incorporates free jazz influences into the heady stew of styles and beats, rounding off a rewarding listening experience in style. A much welcomed return froma  great act.
