This is a seriously ace record! Re-issue of the 1996 classic 'Tried by 12' by The East Flatbush Project. Featuring the very recognisable (and awesome) drums from Al Green 'I'm glad your mine' and the also recognisable (also sampled by Wu-Tang) Odetta 'Sakura'. Definatley the best use (and maybe only use) of the Koto instrument in Hip Hop and a bona fide classic!

The time: 1980. The place: New York City. While clubs in the Bronx and Brooklyn were still emerging from their post-disco hangovers, a new sound was beginning to take its place: Hip Hop. Spyder D's "Big Apple Rappin'," released on Newtroit Records, epitomized the style of this new generation, featuring a simple yet instantly memorable and danceable groove paired with Spyder's slick raps dedicated to his hometown and delivered with distinctly New York attitude. Reissued in a fully licensed fresh pressing, this iconic 12" captures the Hip Hop movement in its nascent days: fun, fresh and ready to party.

Ol’ Skool Flava has turned a critical eye simultaneously toward Nia Records and the Roxanne Saga, both integral facets of pre-Rakim hip-hop. This issue focuses on the Roxanne saga battles between Sparky D, the trailblazing female MC, and Roxanne Shante, the bubble gum popping, braces wearing big mouth who shocked the rap world by going after U.T.F.O with her answer record, “Roxanne’s Revenge” in 1984. The Fantastic Aleems, co-owners of the label, turned all the drama to their advantage, and set up an on record battle between the two lady MCs.

Stones Throw compilaion of region specific hip hop from the very early days - an essential piece of history.... The title tells you all about it really - from the dawn of rap, New York and New Jersey have always been credited as the birthplaces, but the third part of the tri-state area, Connecticut, also has a big part to play, and here the Stones Throw crew bring together some amazingly obscure releases from the area. You should know the level of quality you are going to get with a Stones Throw comp, painstakingly researched, all artist get paid and full histories on the sleeve notes and website. Essential. This LP comes as 9 track double vinyl or 13 track CD - though the first pressing of the CD also contains an exclusive bonus track. Tracks marked * are CD ONLY

I was only 4 when this came out first time around, so I can't give you any of that, 'I remember...' stuff because I can't. But, it is highly unlikely that if you've ever been into hip-hop that you haven't come across this record. It apparently received complaints on radio due to its saucy lyrics, unimaginable nowadays. Having getting revamped by Peaches not long ago, Delicious have decided to re-issue the original in all its glory, and rightly so. Big!

One of the best Nervous Records releases ever. This was rocking every dancefloor back in 1993 before Flex's Hot 97 show started getting more and more commercial. This was also one of the first "Cut and Paste" records from the East Coast scene. The big track is "6 Million Ways To Die" main mix using the classic reggae vocal sample to great effect, whilst the heavy beats pump and Flex gets busy on the decks. The vocal mix featuring Nine is also dope.
On the flip side Sad and Blue is also a dope cut and paste piece.

Smif-N-Wessun gained instant recognition due to their first single "Bucktown," which flourished as an anthem for all of Brooklyn's underground heads. But the initial hype never died down because the DJs soon pounced on the B-side, "Let's Git It On," and raised it to street-hit status as well. The group's full-length debut, DAH SHININ', keeps their streak of successes alive on the strength of Tek's rude boy-accented flow and Steele's low-rocking rag image, and maintains the duos street-rep as "original gun clappers."

An all time classic. From 1989 on the legendary Fresh Records label, this is Stezo's most dancefloor friendly track. Definitely one for the party rockin' DJ's out there. The track is an ultra funky late 80's sample heavy sleeper , based on Lafayette Afro-Rock Band's "Hihache" but with a chorus that mixes in a bit of new age electro bizness and prompts some hands in the air madness. At the time this was a seminal release. Essential piece for the collectors as well as the DJ's. Every hip hop home should have one!

A legendary LP that knocked the underground sideways on its initial release in 2001, and has more than stood the test of time as it still sounds dope today - you would hope that if a new artist came along today with a groundbreaking LP like this that he wouldnt have to wait five years for 'tastemaker' DJs and magazines to peg him as 'the next big thing'. Fans of his recent work will be well pleased with this psychedelic shit, cool flows and funny skits using cartoon samples. Its been a bugger to find for a couple of years, but with the deserved success of 'Madvillany' and 'MM.. Food' someone has had the bright idea of an official repress. Although he’s known primarily for the crossover hit “Just a Friend,” to categorize Biz Markie’s career on the basis of that song would be wholly unjust. Diabolical: The Biz’s Greatest Hits sets the record straight. As a member of the stylistically diverse Juice Crew, the formidable clique that included Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante and Kool G. Rap, Biz Markie’s clown prince character more than held his own. Biz Markie’s manic energy and unbridled persona paved the way for distinctive MCs like Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Busta Rhymes. The Biz’s deft beatboxing skills, humorous storytelling, and freestyle finesse are all clear on undisputed classics like “Nobody Beats the Biz”, “Vapors”, and “Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz.” The package also includes never before seen photography by George Dubose. This fun and funky career retrospective succeeds in giving credit where it is due and truely proves to be the “Ultimate Diabolical”. Don’t sleep, after all, the Biz never does...
